What Should I Wear for a Boudoir Session?
January 23, 2026 · 3 min read
“What should I wear?” is usually one of the first questions we get.
It’s also one of the easiest things to overthink.
You don’t need a closet full of lingerie, and you don’t need to go shopping before your session. We’ll help you figure out what you already have, what photographs well, and what makes sense for the kind of images you want.
Start With Fit
Ignore the number on the tag.
If something fits well, stays where it’s supposed to, and lets you move comfortably, it’s usually a better choice than something you’re constantly pulling, adjusting, or worrying about.
That applies to bras, bodysuits, underwear, corsets, dresses, shirts, and everything else you might bring.
If you’re between two pieces and one looks better standing still while the other actually fits comfortably, bring the one that fits.
Bring More Than One Type of Look
You don’t need every outfit to be lingerie.
Bodysuits, matching sets, corsets, and bras photograph well, but so do oversized shirts, sweaters, button-downs, robes, dresses, and pieces you already wear.
Having a few different options gives us more to work with.
One look might be more polished or structured. Another can be simpler and more relaxed.
You can bring several options and we’ll help narrow them down before we start shooting.
Simple Is Usually a Safe Choice
You don’t need complicated lingerie for it to photograph well.
Solid colors, clean lines, lace, simple straps, and pieces with good shape usually work better than busy patterns or anything with too much going on.
Black is always useful. White, cream, neutrals, deep colors, and softer tones can all work depending on the look we’re creating.
If you’re unsure between simple and elaborate, bring both. We can decide in the studio.
Shoes and Accessories Aren’t Required
Heels can work. So can bare feet.
Jewelry, stockings, garters, boots, jackets, hats, and other accessories can all be used if they fit the session.
But you don’t need accessories just because you’re doing boudoir.
If you never wear heels and hate walking in them, there’s no reason to suddenly make them part of your session.
Bring things you like. We’ll figure out what belongs in the final looks.
We Help With Wardrobe Before the Session
You’re not left on your own with this.
Wardrobe is part of the planning process.
We can look at outfit ideas, talk through colors and styles, build visual references, and help you decide what to bring before session day.
River Rose also has client wardrobe options available depending on sizing and the look we’re creating.
You can still bring more than you think you’ll need. It’s easier for us to remove options than wish we had something else once we start shooting.
You Don’t Have to Buy Anything New
A new outfit can be fun, but it isn’t required.
You may already have a bodysuit, matching set, oversized shirt, sweater, dress, or something else that works perfectly well.
A boudoir session doesn’t need to turn into a shopping trip.
If you want to buy something new, we can help with that too. Just don’t feel like you have to.
Comfort Matters More Than You Think
You’ll be standing, sitting, kneeling, lying down, stretching, and moving through different poses during the session.
That’s why fit matters.
An outfit can look great on a hanger and become a problem the second you start moving in it.
We want pieces that photograph well, but we also want you to be able to move in them without constantly wondering if something shifted, rolled, pinched, or came undone.
If You’re Unsure, Bring It
You don’t need to make every wardrobe decision before you arrive.
Bring the options you’re considering.
We’ll go through them together, look at how they fit, and decide what makes the most sense for the session we planned.
You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
